COGNIT: A Cognitive Serverless Framework, four Use Cases, based on European open source technologies.
The EU-funded project COGNIT (2023–2025) addresses the significant challenges faced by IoT application developers in leveraging the emerging cloud–edge continuum. These challenges stem from resource-constrained edge devices, infrastructure heterogeneity, and the critical need for performance, resilience, security, data sovereignty, and energy efficiency. COGNIT has developed a distributed Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) platform that enables developers to offload tasks across a cognitive computing continuum. Through AI-driven orchestration and automation, this open source solution implements a disaggregated architecture optimized for edge environments, simplifying the complexities of heterogeneous cloud–edge infrastructures. It dynamically allocates and adapts resources in response to security, energy, and performance metrics.
This presentation will provide a high level overview of the COGNIT Project, highlighting its application across diverse sectors such as Smart Cities, Cybersecurity, Wildfire Detection, and Energy. We will also look into some of the European open source technologies that have been used in the project.
